World Environment Day Awards

PBA FM’s radio and internet project Park Friends was a finalist in the Media Category of the World Environment Day Awards 2012. Presented in Melbourne on Friday evening 12 June, the main award went to ABC TV’s Foreign Correspondent (seven person team) program on Sumatran Tigers. However, as a finalist (with a one-person team), it was great to have Park Friends, an entry from the Community Radio sector, recognised in the company of strong entries from ABC TV and SBS TV. See the link to the Media Release below, on the announcement of finalists.

This project model – linking radio, website, text, photographs, CDs, podcasts etc – could well be adapted in any number of ways in many contexts for further lifelong learning initiatives, using radio in conjunction with the latest ICT – information communications technology.

Sincere thanks to all who contributed to this project, especially all of the many interviewees, and the many people from the Friends of Black Hill and Morialta (and President John Fleming) who unstintingly gave freely and generously of their time and expertise in so many ways. PBA FM is also very cognisant of the assistance of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board, without whose support, this project would not have been possible. It was always a joy to work with the John Fleming and the members of the Reference Group and with Volunteer Project Coordinator Liz Millington from the AMLR NRM Board. Thanks too to the Department for Environment and Natural Resources staff who assisted with the official launch at the Morialta Resource Centre in early April – see some great photos on this site.

I have had so many comments on the website and the availability of all twelve programs as podcasts – learning how to create a website has been my lifelong learning project for 2012 – well for the first six months anyway! Also the three Park Friends CDs, with their striking artwork, have been commented on by many; again this is very much appreciated.

The project will be complete by the end of June. However, I do hope you will continue to make use of the podcasts, available through this website, and give some thought to supporting the work of the Friends of Black Hill and Morialta, and similar Friends of Parks groups around South Australia.

Best wishes
Tony Ryan
